The Janney Library is open to visiting researchers by appointment. These media are housed in the Kay Janney Library and Archives, which also is home to a small research collection of more than 2,500 books, scripts, manuscripts, clippings, posters, and audio-visual material related to the history of puppet theater worldwide. In addition, the Institute houses the Puppeteers of America’s Audio-Visual Collection, which is the largest media collection (over 700 items) on puppetry in the United States. Its permanent collection of over 2,500 puppets from all over the world includes marionettes, glove puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppets, body puppets, and stage materials. The Ballard houses one of the three largest puppetry collections in the United States. The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry ( BIMP) is a public museum of puppetry operated by the University of Connecticut and located in Storrs, Connecticut. (I’d be happy to suggest additions to the British segment: Sooty and Sweep Muffin the Mule Watch with Mother programs. Of course, that would also involve an expansion of the museum. I suggest an expert on puppetry from each continent should be involved in any future changes. Considering how detailed the Henson section was, I was expecting more from the other area. In this case, I felt that there was not enough description and that material was placed too closely together to fully appreciate everything on offer. Often, I complain that there is too much writing in a museum. The Jim Henson section of the museum was beautifully laid out and was clear and explicit however, the world puppetry section was less effective. The acoustics between the ticket office and the customer were not good. I asked for two tickets, but realized when I was about to go into the museum that I had only been charged for one, so I had to get back in line. We didn’t get off to a particularly good start. If you have any interest in the subject, $12.50 admission is worth it. There was another exhibit on puppets of the world we also saw but not as fascinating to me, however still worth a walk thru. You will enjoy behind the scene type photos and learning about Jim Henson. If you are a fan of Henson's, then I highly recommend this museum, it was great. My only complaint is I wanted even more and wished the museum were even bigger because I was enjoying it so much. Years prior, I had been in Hollywood for vacation and been to the actual Jim Henson studios so when I visited Atlanta, it was really cool to see more and learn more about Jim Henson.
There is a small section on it in the main area but extra props and back stage photos were on display. I was lucky enough to attend when the extra exhibit on the Dark Crystal was there. I am huge fan of Labyrinth and the Dark Crystal movies from my childhood so was super excited to visit the museum. I left wanting more because to me it was so good and fascinating. This was a great museum and so different from others I have been to.
